History

The Armenians who first settled in Sacramento came from Fresno in 1919. Drawn by employment in the area agriculture and government sectors, many who followed in the 1920s and 1930s were direct survivors of the Genocide.

Armenians have worshipped in Sacramento since 1929 when a group of ten women organized the Ladies Aid Society of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

  • Monthly services were held at St. Paul Episcopal Church (15th and J) by visiting clergy from the San Francisco Bay Area and Fresno until 1951.
  • In 1951, a church location was purchased at 3240 B Street.
  • In 1953, the consecration of St. James Armenian Church was celebrated. The small but permanent spiritual and social center was opened.
  • In 2015 , a new sanctuary was dedicated at 3300 Business Drive, Sacramento. The new Church campus includes Armenian and Sunday school classrooms, social hall, administrative offices and prep kitchen. Plans are underway to further improve the new Church campus.

Today, our parishioners include people from North America, Asia, The Caucasus and the Middle East.
